Your First Visit at Shafi Dental Care: What to Expect

We know choosing a new dentist can feel overwhelming, especially if it’s been a while since your last visit, or if you’ve had an anxious experience in the past. Every step of your first visit at Shafi Dental Care is designed to be clear and comfortable.

Plan for 90 minutes to two hours. We’d rather give you the time you deserve than rush through something as important as your oral health.

Step 1: Give Us a Call

Your journey begins with a simple phone call to our Easton office. Our friendly admin team will walk you through everything: available appointment times, questions, and anything else on your mind. We never want confusion to be a reason someone delays their dental care, so we encourage you to ask us anything during that first call.

Before your visit, we’ll send you paperwork to complete:

– Your comprehensive medical and dental history
– Current medications and known allergies
– Insurance information (if applicable)
– Any concerns or goals you have for your smile

Completing this ahead of time means less time on a clipboard in the waiting room and more time in the hands of someone who’s actually here to help you.

Step 2: Walk Through Our Door

Our receptionist will greet you, confirm your paperwork is complete, and make sure you feel welcomed. We keep our waiting area calm, clean, and welcoming because we know that for many people, just walking into a dental office takes courage.

We’ll give you a clear picture of what to expect financially before anything begins. No surprises.

Step 3: Meet Your Dental Hygienist

You’ll be warmly welcomed to the treatment area by one of our skilled dental hygienists, a familiar face you’ll come to know well over time. Your hygienist is a cornerstone of your care at Shafi Dental Care, and your first visit gives them the time to truly get to know your concerns, your health history, and your goals.

Here’s what your hygiene appointment will include:

Digital Dental X-Rays.
We use digital X-rays, which are fast, comfortable, and use less radiation than traditional film X-rays. These images allow Dr. Shafi to see what’s happening beneath the surface, catching cavities between teeth, bone loss, infections, and other concerns that aren’t visible to the naked eye.

A note about X-rays: At Shafi Dental Care, dental X-rays are a required part of your new patient examination. They are not optional. Without them, we cannot responsibly evaluate the full picture of your oral health. Dental X-rays are the standard of care in modern dentistry, and they are essential to finding problems early, treating them conservatively, and protecting your long-term health. We’re happy to answer any questions you have about them before your visit.

Intraoral Photography.
Our hygienist will use a small intraoral camera to take close-up photos inside your mouth. These images are displayed right on a screen in front of you, so you can see exactly what we see: cracks, worn enamel, areas of concern, and areas that look great. No more wondering what the dentist is talking about.

Comprehensive Periodontal Assessment.
One of the most important and most overlooked parts of a dental exam is a periodontal (gum health) assessment. Your hygienist will check for:

– Gingivitis (early, reversible gum disease)
– Periodontitis (moderate to severe gum disease affecting the bone)
– Areas of recession or inflammation
– Risk factors tied to your overall health

Gum disease has been linked to heart disease, diabetes, and stroke. A periodontal assessment isn’t just about your teeth. It’s about your overall health.

Oral Cancer Screening.
Your hygienist will perform a gentle oral cancer screening, examining your lips, tongue, cheeks, gums, and jaw for any unusual tissue changes. This screening only takes a few minutes and helps us look for changes early.

Hygiene Visit.
Based on what your hygienist finds during the assessment, she’ll perform a thorough professional hygiene visit, removing plaque and tartar (calculus) buildup that your toothbrush can’t reach. If more advanced scaling is needed due to gum disease, your hygienist will discuss those options with you clearly and without pressure. She’ll also go over a personalized home care plan tailored to your mouth, your habits, and your goals: flossing tips, electric toothbrush recommendations, water flosser guidance, whatever will genuinely help you.

Step 4: Dr. Shafi’s Comprehensive Examination

After your hygiene visit, Dr. Shafi will come in to perform a thorough clinical exam. He’ll review your X-rays, your intraoral photos, and your hygienist’s findings. Then he’ll perform your comprehensive exam, including your teeth, gums, jaw joints (TMJ), bite, parafunctional habits, medications, overall health, and existing dental work.

If a tooth needs a crown, he’ll tell you, and he’ll explain why in plain language using the photos and X-rays right in front of you.

At the end of your exam, Dr. Shafi will sit down with you (not stand over you) and discuss:

– A full picture of your current oral health
– Any areas of concern and treatment options
– A personalized treatment plan
– Answers to every single question you have

No rush. No quota. No pressure. Just an honest conversation between a dentist who cares and a patient who deserves the truth about their smile.

If you have dental anxiety or you’re worried about being in the chair, please tell us when you book. We can build in extra time, slower pacing, breaks, or nitrous oxide (laughing gas) to help you stay comfortable. Learn more about our approach for nervous patients.

Dentistry Without Compromise: Our Approach to Insurance

Shafi Dental Care is an unrestricted, fee-for-service, out-of-network dental office in Easton, MD. We are not contracted with any insurance company.
That’s a deliberate choice. By remaining independent of restrictive insurance networks, Dr. Shafi can:
– Spend more time listening to your concerns
– Create truly customized treatment plans
– Focus on long-term results instead of temporary fixes
– Deliver care with precision, comfort, and attention to detail
When you sit down with Dr. Shafi, the conversation is about your needs, your goals, and your options. Not what an insurance company decides to approve.

We Help You Maximize Your Dental Insurance Benefits
Being an out-of-network dentist does not mean you cannot use your dental insurance. Many PPO and traditional dental insurance plans still allow you to receive reimbursement for treatment completed at our office as an out-of-network provider. Our admin team will help you understand what your specific plan covers and how to file for reimbursement.
Our goal is complete transparency. You always understand your treatment, your options, and your financial expectations before moving forward. No hidden fees. No pressure. Just straightforward recommendations focused on your best interest.

Shafi Dental Care does not accept Medicaid or Maryland Healthy Smiles. We mention this clearly so you can make the best decision for your situation.

If You’re Nervous or Overdue for Care
If you’ve been putting this off because of past dental experiences, fear of judgment, or general anxiety, you’re not alone, and you’re not in trouble. Many of our adult patients haven’t been to a dentist in years before their first visit with us, and we’re glad they came.

Dr. Shafi’s approach is built around the Stop-Signal Guarantee: at any point, for any reason, you can raise your hand and we stop. No explanation needed. No judgment.

For patients who’d like extra help relaxing during treatment, we offer nitrous oxide (laughing gas). It’s a gentle option that takes the edge off while keeping you fully awake and aware. Many anxious patients find it makes the visit easier.
